Already a hater of Gator

Written: Nov 30 '00
Pros:easy to install since it doesn't even ask you!
Cons:self-installing, intrusive, hogs ram

Ok, let's start with obtrusive. "Gator" stealthily installed itself onto my computer, piggybacking onto another program, slithering like a virus right on to my desktop. Luckily I know enough about computers to be able to uninstall the software (with much difficulty- the first attempt it stubbornly froze, fighting to stay and hog my RAM!), unlike many novices who would simply leave it on their computer and be annoyed with it until they bought a new one at their local department store. You talk about Microsoft and other big corporations being intrusive, how about some no-name bull program that installs itself on your computer and knows all your passwords and credit card information? The only way you're safe is if you're absolutely sure nobody's ever going to use your computer besides you. If you don't have more than 256 mb of ram then forget it, you'll be bogged down by this waste of bits in no time. So, what else does it do? It comes with something called Offer Companion, which is really an electronic penny-saver magazine that RANDOMLY flashes its ads as you're TRYING to work on your computer!!!

Do I recommend this product? NO! I recommend unplugging all of the servers at Gator's download site and add it on the list of lethal viruses on all Antivirus programs. After all, it shares every characteristic with not just any virus, but an extremely dangerous and intrusive one. What's next? A program called Crocodile that erases all your documents and programs as it taps directly into your bank account? That's really scary but it's likely from these guys. Are we that lazy in this country that we'd rather trust a crummy software program to type in our passwords? Let's give the nearest robber our house keys so he can hold the door for us when we come home every night!
