I bought the refurbished Dell XPS T600 6 months ago and saved $200. Dell's are great computers and not as expensive as people think.
I did extensive research on the web, mags and talking to the tech guys at my company and it looked like the Dell's were the way to go. Of the 3 tech people I talked to, they all had bought Dell's. I didn't have to look further.
I have to admit the sales people, especially the refurbished dept, are very impatient and a bit unfriendly. If I hadn't done my research, I would've been intimidated to talk to these customer reps.
I'm in CA, so I didn't have to pay any taxes. That's over $100 of savings. Just consider that and you'll see Dell's are cheaper than almost any brand name computers out there even your local Gateway.
My computer arrived in three fast days. It was extremely well packed and setup was as simple as it gets.
The only problem I've had with the hardware was a bad modem. But the real problem was the initial customer service I got when I called this problem in.
I know Dell is known for their great customer service and I always pay more for better customer service. The first support guy must've been new, because he didn't know much. What bugged me most was his nonchalant attitude. As usual, I ended up trying to convince this guy I DID have a problem. Now I'm not fond of calling people, holding for 40 minutes and bugging customer service reps.
I called back the next day and this rep was just fabulous. He wrote a work order and even tried to get my scanner working by going to the HP website. Now that's great service.
I would recommend Dell desktops to anyone, including the novices and experts.
