| jmrm5's Full Review: Axis Systems Fusion 8100 Series |
Ever heard of Axis Systems? If not listen up, because they make serious notebook computers. They truly deliver performance that undercuts “other more popular” manufacturers notebook computers. This is particularly true with the 8100 series of notebooks.
This series features the largest notebook screen size available at 15", so they say I believe Gateway makes one this size also. I guess they do not want you to know that. Funny thing is that Gateway says the same thing. Ok I guess it does not matter with this “he said, she said” stuff they both have big nice screens.
This series also features a mobile Pentium III processor, 8MB 3D ATI graphics, and 6X DVD. Now this line truly offers a desktop replacement in most cases. The model I am reviewing in this epinion is the FUSION 8160V.
This thing is mobile monster to say the least. It’s mainstay features are as follows:
-mobile Pentium III 700MHz
-15" active matrix screen
-256MB SDRAM of memory (WOW!!!)
-20GB Ultra DMA HD
-ATI Rage LT Pro 2X AGP w/ 8MB (nice)
-CD/DVD 6X DVD-ROM
Now it should be noted that these features out the Fusion 8160V online with other manufacturers high end notebooks, but some of those do not even ship with some of the hardware feature as this one does. You will be hard pressed to find another notebook with 256MB of SDRAM for under $2500.
My first contact with this manufacturer was at a local computer show in Arizona. I was on business and what struck me first and the most was the prices/features that Axis was loading up into their notebooks. I like the idea of just because you are a small manufacturer, it does not mean you cannot make the best product out there.
I am not saying it is the best notebook period, but this type of competition is what make this industry great. More selection for more customers = better prices for everyone. I like that idea, and I am sure others feel the same way also.
Now only if the auto industry could follow suit with the computer industry, that being that speed is doubled and prices are halfed every 9-12 months. In this case you could buy a 1996 Ford Explorer for a few hundred buck. That would be neat.
Bottom line is that if you want a power notebook but you too are budget conscience like the majority of the world, the Fusion 8160V is worth a serious look over.
