Going into my senior year in college, I realized that I didn't want to be cooped up in my room all year as I wrote my thesis. I wanted to move around to different libraries, to take notes and write. I invested in a Dell Inspiron 7000 and I've been happy ever since.
First, buying a computer from Dell was a pleasure. Their website ordering system allows one to select individual components and software which one would like in installed in their new computer. I upgraded hard drive space and RAM from the base model Inspiron, adding slightly to the cost. The computer was shipped promptly and all the software was pre-installed.
This laptop is not small. Its speed and features are similar to a desktop's and it's hard to cram a floppy drive, DVD, speakers, and a 15" display in a small, lightweight package. The Dell is not a great choice for frequent travellers, but for those who will take a few different places nearby, it's fantastic. A blazing fast processor (it's PIII now, I think, but mine's a PII), bright active matrix XVGA display, comfortable keyboard, and intuitive trackpad make it a breeze to use - as easy as any desktop really.
I've never had any problems with either the hardware or the pre-installed software for the 14 months I've owned this computer. It's solidly constructed and durable. Dell has an excellent service plan should you need it, but it's almost a waste of money! I highly recommend this computer for students or anyone who wants a powerful computer and who is cramped for space or who moves around.
