dummy email

Written: Jul 12 '00
Pros:a few extras
Cons:a lot...please read.

Dummy e-mail (noun): an e-mail account that is used only for mass email or trash e-mail.

That is what this email account is for.

The Good

Its free. What more can I say. You don't really need a lot more reasoning than that. But yes there are a lot of free email services out there why should you try this one. Well, there are a few things that netscape offers in order to stay in the business.

I'm not sure about hotmail, but netscape offers extras that you gain when you sign up for thier service. One nice thing is a website. Yup you get your own website if you want to build one and have a little place to dabble with. You really don't need to know any html or anything they make most of it for you. Though I'm pretty sure if you want to use the website, but if you already signed up for the email service then you don't have to do anything special to gain this service as well. Here's the site to sign up to create your website: http://home.netscape.com/sitecentral/teaser.html

I'm not sure if hotmail does this, but netscape would download your mail from another account and KEEP THE OLD MAIL IN THE ORIGINAL BOX! This was important for me because I didn't want to lose my mail to another account. So that is the main reason why I decided to just use the netscape mail. But that ended up being a flaw as well (read into the bad section).

Besides that - I can't think of any reason why netscape mail is better than hotmail.

The Bad

Its pretty slow on loading. If you use this site I hope you never actually go to it. Use it for junk mail that you never want to see. What I used it for was to have an account where I could access the email that I have in my edu account even if I couldn't get to a telnet prompt. Or if the edu account was down I could still see some of the mail that I had.

If you have too much mail in the account there's a max of 5 mb. Which is generally a lot, but when I have this account downloading my email every hour, the mailbox filled really quickly. So when I didn't watch the account frequently it would fill really quickly. And there is no way to get rid of all the mail at one time. So I had to spend the time to delete twenty messages at a time. It took forever.

Also another bad thing about netscape mail was that there were these messages that netscape always gave to me that just said "don't delete". And so I left them there at first but I soon noticed that I would get one of those a day! And after awhile there were more of those messages than there was mail (after I cleaned it out first that is). So in the end I just kept deleting them.

Overall

Netscape mail has one good thing which was the ability to download your mail from another account and keep the mail there. But besides that you can all their other benefits through other ways. I would not get a netscape account. I hardly use it anymore, and it really hasn't been worth keeping up.
