Internet File Zone, formerly Atrieva, formerly Xactlabs, now bought out/acquired/assimilated by DriveWay, is an online backup pioneer.
I used to work for them way back in 1994 when they were known as Xactlabs. Back then, the Internet was not as popular as it is now and the online backup service connected users directly with the backroom hardware via modems and ISDN connections.
The problem with being a pioneer in something is that others will copy you and make the service better. This is the problem with Internet File Zone. Sure, you get 10 Megs free. Sure, you get access to those file from any web browser. But that's it.
THE GOOD
10 Megs of FREE online storage available from any computer connected to the internet.
To get more space you have to pay for it.
They do have something called Internet File Zone Plus which gives you more space and a scheduler that works like standard tape/hd/network backup programs with the added features of scheduling, multi-file backups etc.
The Plus service also offers subscribers the added benefit of sending you a CDROM with all your files on it in case of disaster.
THE BAD
Have to log in to their web-based interface to do anything.
Can only upload and download ONE FILE AT A TIME! Yuck.
Seems really slow at times.
SUMMARY
If you want a "fire and forget" backup program, the Internet File Zone Plus service isn't that bad. Working like a standard backup program but storing files over the internet, it works well for demanding users or small businesses. Just select your backup criteria, schedule the backups and let it do it's thing.
If you are cheap and want FREE backups, then I'd have to recommend against the "basic" service-- backing up ONE FILE AT A TIME is just too agonizing.
The better FREE service is the one offered by the company that just bought out Atrieva, DriveWay. There, you get more space and the interface is much more advanced and it even lets you use Win98's Web Folders feature which allows you to copy files as easily as using folders on your desktop.
