| brangans's Full Review: Apple Power Macintosh G4 Base |
Apple does it again. The PowerMac G4 is all it is cracked up to be and more. High speed, good modem, interfaces that are simple, and a relatively solid operating system. And speaking of speed, this beast is as fast as the highest-end PC products around (rule of thumb, multiply the MHz rating by about 2.5 to compare it to a PC).
If you are fed up with needing to run McAfee First Aid, scandisk, and the other utilities you need to keep a Wintel PC running, and crave lightning fast speed, then this machine is for you. The G4 comes with 2 USB ports, 2 Firewire ports, a 56K modem, keyboard and mouse - recent deals include either 64 Mbyte or 128 Mbyte of additional RAM to keep more software running at once.
The new style of case is very easy to open, and RAM installation takes about 2 minutes - start to finish - even for the novice. The USB ports are easy to use, although there is not a large selection of USB devices on the market.
The keyboard and mouse have a lot to be desired. Apple would do well to replace these items with something more standard for the average user. We chose to replace both the keyboard and the mouse with the Macally iKey and Microsoft's Intellimouse (both USB devices).
The G4 comes with 2 monitor ports that accepts both Apple and PC style monitors. If the G4 is like other Macs, 2 monitors can probably be connected at once for those who desire to have their applications running in several places (and not overlapping).
So, if you are hungry for power, tired of trying to troubleshoot registry file errors, and want a solid, dependable machine, get this - it's a bargain.
