I will admit I do miss the hard plastic of the Atari 2600. But of course a one button, 4 direction controller these days wouldn't do anyone much good. This is a great option for sports games and not a bad option for racing games (of course we'd all love a nice steering wheel control for our desk) but certainly I'd go with a stick controller for any flying game.
I use my controller for sports games mainly and although the precision seems to be just a bit off at times for the price it is certainly adequate. The six button layout could be a problem for someone with small hands, the A and Z (two furthest from each other) are quite a reach in the heat of battle. But you do get used to it. The top buttons are larger and responsive without being too sensitive.
Overall, for the price this is a solid choice.
