| Dr_Steph's Full Review: Palm m100 Slim Leather Case |
I purchased the Palm m100 Slim Leather Case at the same time that I bought the Palm itself. Once I saw that I didn't need a case for this Palm I thought about returning it. After all, it's not exactly cheap. As it turned out, my purchase of this case was very fortuitous, because I ended up needing it almost right away.
The Palm m100 comes with a hard plastic flip cover which seems perfectly adequate at first glance. In fact, it has a handy little viewing window in the front so you can see the clock without having to glance at your watch (rude in some situations).
However, this handy dandy flip cover popped off my Palm the first night I had it when one of my kids knocked the Palm on to the floor (ouch!). I had a heck of a time getting this cover back on. I have pretty bad arthritis in one hand (from my wild and crazy days as a white water kayaker). Things like putting on this flip cover which may seem mildly annoying to most was downright painful for me. Not only that, but once it came off the first time, it seemed predisposed to do it again…and again.
I quickly stashed this flip cover away and put the Palm m100 Slim Leather Case on my new Palm. When you first open the case, you see an attached square of velcro in the upper center of the right side. This velcro square is stuck to a similar velcro square with peel-off tape on the back. You just peel off the tape (duh), center the Palm over the right side of the case and PRESS DOWN.
I was a little surprised to see velcro used to secure the Palm to the case, although I'm not sure what would be a better alternative, if any. I guess with velcro you can remove the Palm when you want to change the batteries. I haven't done that yet and frankly I'm a little hesitant to pull it off there. It seems SO well stuck that I'm worried that tape will peel off before the velcro will. Not that that's the end of the world, but its not something I feel like dealing with right now.
Enough About the "Install" - Now What Does This Baby Do?
Well, it doesn't DO anything, except protect my Palm m100 (which is enough). OK, let me describe it so you can get a feel for this product.
Appearance and Features of the Palm m100 Slim Leather Case
This black case is shaped just like the Palm m100 so you don't lose any of the sleek, sexy lines of this PDA. As I already indicated, the Palm m100 is attached to the right side of the case when it is opened up. The left side has three slots for holding credit cards, a driver's license, or other similar items. I prefer to carry my credit cards in my hanging wallet so I use these slots for my business cards (both my "real" ones and my Epinions ones) and my faculty ID. There are also two pockets, one on each side, for stashing cash or other miscellaneous papers.
The Palm m100 Slim Leather Case lives up to its name and is quite slim. When opened, it lays perfectly flat and is no thicker than a lightweight checkbook cover (unless, of course, you stuff it full of cards and papers). The case latches closed with a leather clasp and a snap so that it stays shut and doesn’t fall open accidentally. When closed, the top and bottom of the Palm m100 are uncovered so there is no obstruction to the HotSync port or the IR port. Basically, you can get "beamed" without having to open you case. You do have to open it to accept the beam, though. Oh well…
The nicest feature of the Palm m100 Slim Leather Case, in my opinion, is the feel of the leather. The Nappa leather is incredibly soft and smooth! I bring my Palm to class so I can make appointments with students and I find myself absent-mindedly caressing my Palm while I lecture. My students think it's amusing but I don't care because the feel of this case relaxes me and helps me feel centered.
Anything I Don't Like About This Case?
Not really. What's not to like? OK, well, since you asked, there is one tiny thing that bugs me. It's a little tricky to fish the stylus out of the back of the Palm with this case attached. Not impossible, not painful - it just slows me down an iota. However, it's still easier to get the stylus out with this case than it was when I had the hard flip cover folded all the way back. Now THAT was hard!
Overall Recommendation?
This leather case certainly is not mandatory if you are going to own a Palm m100…but it sure is nice. It looks sharp, it feels sensuous, and it protects your Palm while allowing you to carry a few additional cards or money with you. In my opinion, it's worth the $25 price tag.
P.S. NOT recommended for people who are trying to overcome a "leather fetish."
