I picked up a re-manufactured Gateway PC, and I've been completely satisfied with the results. It was affordable, and it's rock-solid in terms of performance. In the months that I've had it, I haven't had so much as a minor problem, which really is spectacular when you consider how bug-ridden Windows 98 often is.

For far less than $1000, I got a 400 Mhz Celeron processor, 64 MB of RAM, and a 10 GB hard drive. If I'd have gotten a brand-new model, I might have paid twice what I have.

Using gateway.com is excellent for that reason.. they have updated lists of remanufactured models that are on sale. If you check often, and have some luck sprinkled in, you're bound to get a great system at a great price. I was lucky enough to do so, and you should be able to as well.
