I purchased a Gateway because I felt it was the best way to get the most up to date computer, one built for me and with what I wanted. I found most "computer stores" sold what they wanted to move and the often played with the truth when pushing for the sale. I was very satisfied with the quality of the computer. The sales staff was excellent and helpful.

Of course another reason to buy Gateway was the service after the sale. Here gateway did not live up to my expectations. I have had the computer about 17 months. In that time I have attempted to use the tech service twice. Both times I used e-mail, as the phone was always busy. I received replies back with in 24 hours. The problem was that the reply did nothing to help me. The first question about the modem was met with "it's not our problem" no specific help was offered. I just gave up after about 5 back and forth e-mails.

In October 99 I tried again for help. My initial inquiry included answers to a series of questions required by gateway to initiate the service help. My response was - in order to trouble shoot this problem we will need some more information. Next they asked me the exact same questions I had already answered. The next reply said I must do certain steps.
I followed instructions, which did not work and reported same. Answer - do the same thing- my response was ignored. This was repeated two more times. I was getting angry with the total failure to read my responses and said so. Now my response was - please be aware gateway cannot support or configure third party hardware - if you install any third party hardware on your system gateway cannot be liable for any problems. Have a nice day.

Since I had not installed third party hardware, nor was third party hardware mentioned in my request for help, I failed to see the relevance of this reply. What it meant to me was, go away and stop bothering us. My next reply to gateway was not answered. So much for tech help.
