I'll cut to the point: the Dell Inspiron 3800 is an excellent laptop. I purchaced the model with a Pentium3-600, 128mb of RAM, 14.1" display and 12 gig hard disk. The computer has worked pratically ::perfectly::. It is able to suspend and wake up OK (unlike my compaq POS...) and hasn't crashed yet. The 14.1 inch display is crisp and bright, almost too bright for me. When I first used it there appeared to be one dead pixel in the mid-upper left corner, but it seems to be ok now. The DVD-ROM give flawless video. The smart Lithium battery charges in under two hours and appears to have an average life of 2.5-3.5 hours.
A tip: buy the best system you can afford, because all laptops are inherently tricky to upgrade. Go for 128mb of ram, espically if you want to run Windows 2000. The DVD-ROM drive is definatly worth it. Its very relaxing to sit outside or in your favorite reclining chair with the Inspiron in your lap and watching a good movie. Speaking of movies, the sound quality from the speakers inside the unit are so-so at best, but the quality from external headphones are great.
I will also buy a few other items for the unit very soon. If you plan to get an Inspiron or any other laptop (but for the love of god don't get a COMPAQ!!!) you should consider getting these items:
1. Carry case.
2. Second battery.
3. Mouse
4. External Zip Drive
5. S-Video cable and audio cable for DVD playback on television
