The Mp3 Source

Written: Dec 26 '99
Pros:Large Active List of Mp3s
Cons:Software bit Buggy

The problem today with searching for MP3s on the web is that never ever are the links updated frequently enough for you to be able to download what you think you have just found. Scour used to be the coolest site on the block -- but then everyone realized just how unreliable they were for mp3s (but perhaps you liked to try all 100 returned links). FTP sites can be unknown and speed, and also up and down.
So that's where Napster comes in. Napster is a peice of software that makes public certain mp3s you specify on your HD. When you go online, Napster's software reports to a central database saying your files are online, when you go offline, so do your files. So the database (which usally is between 500-600GB of active mp3s) is always current. All you do once connected, is search the other thousands of Napster connected mp3s.
Also napster tells you what speed connection other computers connected to their database are. So you know what to expect when it comes to download speed.
Overall an amazing product. While their software can die on occasion, that's now your biggest concern, rather then fretting you'll never find that favorite song.
