Palm Wins Hands Down
Dec 17 '99
I went with a PDA to solve all my PIM needs once and for all -- addresses, phone numbers, e-mails, schedule, to-do lists, you name it. Why did I go with Palm? Reliability and ease of use. As a long-time software developer, I noted that NO Microsoft product has ever been easy to use, and NO version of Windows has ever been reliably stable.
I also noted that all the Windows CE products seemed to require mini-keyboards. I HATE mini-keyboards -- the main reason I use a laptop as rarely as possible. Furthermore, the CE products are general larger and not the least bit convenient to carry. The Palm fits in the palm of my hand, where it belongs.
The Palm OS uses the GraffitiTalk system to read manually-written characters. It won't be perfect until it can read my mind, but until then, it is a far cry superior to the Apple Newton days. For those who don't like GraffitiTalk, you also have the option of soft-typing from a software keyboard interface. All the options are great!
The interface is simple, intuitive, and always there. When it comes to PDAs, stability, simplicity, and elegance go a long ways. I use my Palm not only for scheduling and phone numbers, but for notes, to-do lists, and shopping lists as well. It made Christmas shopping this year a lot easier!
I have used mine for more than a year now, in its basic flavor. I look forward a reasonably-priced upgrade that takes me into the PDA web/e-mail world as well.
