Some programmability problems, but awesome product!

Written: Mar 31 '00
Pros:Most comfortable keyboard made, 5 stars for ergonomics!
Cons:Macro feature sometimes locks up keyboard BIOS requiring reboot.

These keyboards are awesome, despite their price cost. I have 2 at work and 2 at home. I use the Professional QD model with the DVORAK keys. I can type way faster than I used to be able to on a standard keyboard/standard layout. It did take some time to adjust (several months), but now my hands feel better than ever. People also like to ooh and ahh at the neat contour. The frequently used keys (enter, backspace, space, delete) are accessed by the thumb. Also the arrow keys are on the bottom row, accessed by the first two fingers. The function keys can all be accessed without twisting your hands too much (nice feature for those keyboard addicts). This takes some time to get used to, and people trying to type on your keyboard will curse at you :) There are also a few caveats that I feel I must expose. First of all the programmable keyboard does not work well with several top brand electronic keyboard switches (the kind that let you share a $400 keyboard and mouse with several machines). I have also had some problems in the past with the keyboard on a digital workstation (it screws up the keyboard BIOS and you have to reboot the machine). Also, when macro mode is enabled I can sometimes type faster than the keyboard can process (yes I am a fast-typing freak) Occasionally I will have problems on my other machines as well which will require a reboot. This happens only a few times a month. With that said, the best thing to do is to get the classic which has no programmability functions. I have disabled macro features on all of my Kinesis. With that said my overall assessment is that if your hands hurt you simply must buy one of these keyboards.
