| zwr14's Full Review: Ricoh Internal CD-RW drive |
Each time this drive spits out another perfect CD, I congratulate myself on the purchase. I've had the drive for a few months and never had a problem with it. Only two coasters (out of around 50 perfect recordings) were mistakes made by my binary extraction software.
No matter which software I use (Adaptec Easy CD, CDRWin) the drive works flawlessly. Give it 17-18 minutes and it's done. (I can't even watch a sitcom all the way through.) The finished CD's even spin at the fastest rate in my 40x CD ROM, something which none of my friends' CDRs achieve.
I've had no problem with audio discs as long as I close the session. Both my household CD players read them, as well as my CD deck in my truck. Other than scratches (the Verbatim CDRs don't seem to be very durable), the CDRs sound perfect.
I've not burned any CDRWs yet, as I like permanent data. I'm sure it would perform just as well. Of course, you have to buy 4x certified media to RW at 4x. The drive can recognize inferior media and will not let you record 4x on 2x discs.
Installation was a breeze. I had to change the jumpers to designate "slave", and I chained the drive to my 40x CD ROM. Although the drive supports digital audio output, I hooked my soundcard to the analog output. My 40X CD ROM was using the digital input. No drivers to install (except for DOS). I had to update my recording software to support the drive, but that was also easy.
I like the drive's appearance. It has no huge LEDs to keep me awake at night, and only one large, round button for eject. The tray is hidden by a fold-down door, which keeps out the dust. It has the regular headphone jack and a volume roller.
After I recommended the drive to a friend who is building a computer, he went out and bought one. He has not installed it yet, but he will rate it as soon as I sign him up. ;)
