First Motherboard I've Returned

Written: Aug 31 '00
Pros:Plenty of features, very easy to install
Cons:Buggy chipset, requires patches. Bad AGP support.

I bought this motherboard after reading many reviews of chip sets that supported 133 MHz buses. I've had an Asus board before (and since).
Asus generally makes great motherboards, and for many people, the P3V4X is no exception. This motherboard had good features, and a revamped VIA chipset that was getting good reviews. I knew ahead of time that I would need certain drivers, and likely a new BIOS (so beware anyone new to installing motherboards).
Unfortunately, my experiences with these boards were far from good. As always, the Asus manual was very good. Installation proceeded without a hitch. Ultimately, wether it be hardware or drivers, I could not get my system to run stable. I spent two weeks in online forums trying to iron everything out and in the end, I had a stable system as long as I didn't try to start any 3D accelerated applications. Too bad that's what I ultimately used it for.
I'm giving this motherboard a '2' because it's the only motherboard I've ever returned. I still have one in another system I built, and it runs pretty well. 3D applications aren't used too often, and all of the add-in cards are different than what I had in mine.
