NetZero has been the longest running player in the free ISP industry. One could even say that they coined the term "free internet", despite their originally choppy beginning.
When I first started using NetZero, it was because I was seeking an alternative to my firewalled university connection which didn't allow me to access certain things on the internet (like napster, for example). Unfortunately, NetZero was heavily laden with ads and pop-ups which quickly sent me seeking a different provider. I used AltaVista for awhile but I recently switched back to NetZero since AltaVista's service was discontinued. I was pleasantly surprised to see a cleaner, easier, and more efficient design. The long surveys that they required their users to fill out were long gone. Instead, the only advertisement they displayed was the 460x60 ad bar at the top of the screen.
I will continue to use NetZero because of its reliability. The only time I get disconnected is when I idle for too long, which is a normal procedure that all ISPs do. They have been around for about a year or so now and have proved to me that they are here to stay.
