I purchased this machine about Eight months ago, at a time when the first dvd notebooks were coming out. Monetary considerations forced me to opt for this model instead of the 4010XDVD (which is equipped with a 400 mghz Pentium III instead of the rather wimpy Celeron) and that is a decision I have come to regret. This machine is not bad for casual use, with the emphasis on casual. Sure its fine for surfing the web and writing e-mails, but the need for more speed can be felt any time you endevour a slightly more intensive activity, for instanace: editing pictures using Adobe Photoshop, creating a new Excel spreadsheet, or getting that latest presentation shored up in Powerpoint.
Griping about the less than stellar processor aside, this notebook is a good combination of portabiltiy and true desktop replacement. I have no problem hefting the 7 or so pounds around with me, and with an internal floppy and dvd this little notebook is a true all in one package. The price is not too bad and the machine comes well stoked with usable software items like Mediametrics DVDExpress and Ring Central. You also get an additional choice of 5 titles from a limited catalouge, with a few decent options.
The dvd performace is excellent, motion is fluid and crisp, and the 14.1 screen is easy on the eyes. Battery life, however, tends to deflate this ballon, seeing as I have to swith bateries to catch the last 15 minutes of a two and a half hour flick (a three hour life is claimed by the manufacturer)
Harddrive and memory are adequate, with 6 gigs and 64 mb, respectively, and the case is surprisingly sturdy (even thought the plastic does tend to have a slight cheap feel).
In summing up I would have to say I am, overall, pleased with the purchase. If you are a college student, a weekend net geek, or just one of the millions of people who uses a computer an hour or so a day for mainly diversion, you can't go wrong with this machine. If you want speed and consistency, on the other hand, spend a few bucks more a grab a machine with a PIII chip (the Tecra 8100 is worth a look if you must have Toshiba).
