Free And Easy!Dec 10 '00 Write an essay on this topic. We all want to speed up our internet connection, and there is good reason. Long ago, when 14.4 connections were screaming fast, we wanted fast, and now we have connections such as DSL, Cable, and T1 readily available to us. But guess what people, your sluggish internet connection, may not be the connection at all. *gasp* The first step, how much RAM is available? All information that you receive from the internet, must go through RAM to be processed by the processor, and interpreted into graphics by the video card. In english: Those three things (memory, processing speed, and video memory) all have an integral part on your internet connection. For example: Running IE 5.5, ICQ, Zone Alarm, Norton Anti-Virus, Real Jukebox, Intel's ProDSL, and Real Tray the Epinions Home Page took nearly 12 seconds to load on my 640k DSL connection. However, I close all but ZoneAlarm, Internet Explorer, ICQ and Norton, and there was a 4 second drop in page loading time. Note After this test I installed a new video card with 4-times the video memory, for an additional 2 second drop. Now, we visit my girlfriend's house, who is now my fiance, she uses AOL, ICQ, Norton, all the Real software, with a 56k connection. She loaded the same page, took nearly twice as long (23 seconds or so). Now I close all the Real software, shaving off about 5 seconds, while I was on I downloaded a Ad powered ISP, and loaded the same page 3 seconds faster (15 seconds). The last example takes us to the next subject: Server Load/Traffic. No matter how fast your connection, you will bottleneck on the other end, if they are busy. Try loading the Compaq web page with DSL, then try again with 56k, about a 3 second difference. Then there is the server you must go through for our ISP, the more traffic, the slower you go. Period! So what are these higher priced connection speeds good for? Why that would be downloading, every thing that you can download will be faster, depending on speed of connection. On our broadband connection provided at work, we have received 101MB downloads in a matter of minutes, when on 56k it would literally take a day or so. And since the average internet user spends about 85% of his/her time downloading, this is the true benefit. |
