$2000 PC for a Poweruser! RAID & 1.1GHZ!
Dec 29 '00
OK... The Date matters, so Ignore this as of March 2001!!!
ALSO, FYI: I am a poweruser, and this system is for a poweruser or gamer, not your average joe... Your average Joe should only spend about $1000 or so on the computer itself, and the rest on software and extras like Printers and Scanners, etc...
First Quarter 2001 $1500-$2000 machine (Leaning to $2000) ...
I. Memory will be Key in 2001 with the latest breed of "See who can OINK the loudest" operating systems from Microsoft.. ME (Millenium Edition) will be oinking away on most systems, and Whistler, the new OS, will be key in compatibility...
II. The Athalon (Thunderbird model) spanks even the P4 clock cycle for clock cycle, and in punch for the buck as well... Thats why I picked it. Here we go!
Proc - AMD Thunderbird 1.1 GHZ $210
*** Take advantage of a recent price drop!
Memory - 256 MB RAM (Crucial) $190
*** If possible get a single stick for expansion.
Motherboard - Asus K7 RAID $125
HDD(1) IBM Deskstar 60GB $275
HDD(2) IBM Deskstar 60GB $275
*** RAID will allow two hard drives to appear as one HUGE one that is twice as fast... (RAID 0)
** Hows your math? That's 120 GB of storage at probably close to 50 MB per second... SUSTAINED!!! Now quit drooling on my review!
CASE - Mid tower (Funky colors optional) $50
** I would prefer a full tower for cooling reasons...
DVD - 12X or Higher $80
CDRW - Any 8X CDRW or Higher $150
Video - ATI Radeon 64 DDR $225
Monitor - Princeton 19" $250
** Drastically underpriced good monitor!
Sound Card - SB Live MP3 $65
** Almost like a SB Live Platinum, but price is much lower.
Speakers - Minimum 3 Piece with Sub $60
** I priced Yammaha 3 piece..
Linksys 10/100 Net Card $17
** No modem here, I gotta have BROADBAND! CABLE OR DSL!!!
Standard Keyboard & Mouse $20
