| adilz's Full Review: Alps MD-5000P Printer |
I use this printer for printing photographs, and the quality is truly excellent. I will recommend that the dye sub upgrade should be purchased since it allows continuous tone photo quality prints. Alps should consider including the dye sub key in the base price of the printer.
Of the many dye sub printers I have used, this is the most inexpensive, and produces the best quality results. The downside is that the speed is quite slow, and it takes almost 16 minutes to produce a 8x10 color dye sub print. The 2400 dpi wax transfer print is much faster and is also of great quality, much better than any ink jet I have seen. The prints are crisp and long lasting.
Since the ribbons are fairly expensive, I will recommend that a cheaper ink-jet be used for regular draft printing of web pages and the like, and this printer should be reserved for high quality jobs. It can print foil and this allows you to make excellent presentation material.
In photo printing however, this printer seems less expensive to use in its wax transfer mode than comparable photo ink-jet printers. The ink does not dry out and the cartridges are used to their fullest. The quality is better too. The dye sub is more expensive, but you get much better quality than the wax transfer mode.
