Two weeks ago I subscribed to Ameritech's DSL service. On the day of installation, two Ameritech employees showed up at my residence with the equipment. One hour later, after some helpful re-wiring of the phone lines in the house, and after installing the equipment, my DSL was working.
The DSL modem that was included in my "package" was a Wirespeed External DMT ADSL Ethernet Modem. The installation was as simple as plugging in the power cord, attaching the phone line from the wall jack, and connecting the modem to my ethernet card. The three, green "READY" lights lit up beautifully. After installing the software from the CD-ROM, one reboot later I was surfing the web.
Granted, much of the hassles associated with DSL are in the software and the different settings needed, but this Wirespeed External modem was one of the most fool-proof parts of the job. This was literally plug-'n-play, and I couldn't imagine a simpler process.
I know this article is useless for anyone seeking remedies for problems they may be having, but my confidence is with the manufacturer, since hopefully the product IS as good as I claim. Ideally, everyone should experience the hassle-free DSL installation that I was lucky to have. If not, keep smiling and please don't hunt me down! Good luck.
