I'm a professional photographer so image is everything to me but you don't have to be a pro to appreciate the high quality and affordable price of the Epson 1270 printer or its smaller sidekick the Epson 870.
After the film, there is digital whether it be from a digital camera or a digital creation created in programs such as Photoshop. The problem with digital has always been output. Digital cameras are great but what if you want to share that picture of your dobie balancing a hot dog on the end of his long snout with someone who doesn't have a computer or an email address?
For pros, the answer used to be service bureaus who would output a digital image file for you, or plunking down thousands upon thousands of dollars for a dye sub, etc printer that had the long lasting qualities of traditional photographic prints. (If you pay a photographer a couple of thousand for wedding pictures, it would be nice if the photos lasted at least until your next wedding anniversary, right?)
Inkjet prints made from standard inks and paper combinations did not have the kind of longevity that professionals demanded (though some aftermarket manufacturers such as Lumijet do provide archival inks and papers for Epson printers but the price of these supplies are ridiculously high.)
That has all changed with Epson, the pro's choice of inkjet printers with this new line of affordable, high quality inkjets, the 1270 and the 870.
Being a pro, who wanted the ability to pump out 11x14 prints, I opted for the 1270. (the Epson 870 is the smaller version that handles regular sized papers, 81/2 x 11, and is half the cost.)
Depending on the Epson paper (made specifically for these printers) that you use, these inkjet prints will last at least 10 years before any objectionable fading is seen! And the prints are water resistant so splash away and the inks won't run. (Just about every product made by man fades, carpets, sofas, clothes, even traditional photographic prints so finding something that has a slow fade is essential.)
I invite you to explore www.wilhelm-research.com. This is where the pros go for the latest archival ratings of imaging products and you will be amazed at how the Epson 1270 / 870 leads the pack over other inkjets.
The street price for the 1270 printer was only $499 at the time of its introduction which means you can get it for less now. The inks and papers specifically designed for the longevity factor are reasonably priced and are not an issue when it is compared with what I pay my pro lab for prints of similar size.
But what about the image quality? Fantastic!
I printed a 20 meg image to an 8x10 (took about two minutes to print!) and took that inkjet print along with conventional photographic prints to a professional photographer's convention. I showed the prints to pro photographers and half of them could NOT tell the difference between the inkjet print and the traditional photographic print.... the quality is THAT GOOD.
In all honesty, the Epson photo printers aren't known for their printing of text though I find it acceptable for my needs.
But when it comes to image quality, the Epson 870 and the 1270 are the leaders in photographic quality and longevity. For inkjet prints that last longer than your memory, buy one today.
