| tarthurs's Full Review: MicroSolutions Backpack CDRW |
Microsolutions designed these drives specifically for laptop computers, but it is an answer to a prayer if you compute on a budget, but have multiple computers to support. Since the drive is not meant to be used with a laptop all the time, the drivers can deal with not finding a drive, so it makes it ideal to share this device among several computers.
The backpack is designed to attach to the parallel port. It has a second port to be used with a printer at the same time. One of the problems I have seen reported elsewhere (although I haven't had the problem) is that some printers don't coexist with parallel port devices very well. I suspect that this may be due to the mode of the port -- some older ports do not support bi-directional parallel modes, and some need to be set that way in the bios, or in the windows device preferences.
This device is ideal for supporting more than one computer. You move the cable from one computer to another as you need it. CD-RW discs make very good backups, so it is ideal for this use. Many people don't need the CDRom any time except when they are reading backups or installing software.
