A Saga of Quality

by gridtex , Dec 27 '99
Pros: Quality, gold and silver foil printing
Cons: Availability of cartridges, slow
The Alps MD-5000P is the most interesting printer on the market today. There are always two sides to every coin. If you are a low volume user, and a quality fanatic, the Alps MD-5000P is your ideal printer. Its quality with the dye sublimation upgrade...

Poor quality short life of usage

by lboeckl , Jan 06 '01
Pros: great images
Cons: Poor quality of construction and support (Japan only)
I own an Alps 5000 printer with the dye sub upgrade. I have used it around 14 months now. I printed approx 100 photos on its vPhoto paper and one the high quality photo paper. The images were unbelieveably wonderful. Best I have ever saw anywhere...

Fantastic quality prints - when it works!

by nlleigh , May 17 '00
Pros: wonderful prints, individual ink ribbons
Cons: KEEPS BREAKING DOWN, USES TOO MUCH INK!
I have an Alps MD-5000. No 'P' after the name, but it looks exactly like the one in the photo. Let me tell you, I was so impressed with the printing jobs this little machine produces, that I was absolutely thrilled with it when I first got it....

Better than photo quality!

by balberth , Dec 22 '00
Pros: Print quality
Cons: Speed, cost of supplies, driver software
The Alps MD-5000P printer is in a class by itself when it comes to consumer oriented photo quality printers.

I purchased the ALPS MD-5000 printer around a year ago after doing a lot of research and looking at the best Epson, HP and Canon had...

A hidden gem of a printer

by f8lee , Jul 30 '00
Pros: Excellent colorfast prints on multiple substrates
Cons: somewhat slower than inkjets
The ALPS MD5000 is an outstanding printer - versatile insofar as what kinds of papers it can print on, rugged, and output that is both long lasting and excellent. Add the dye-sublimation kit, and it will produce virtual halide photograph type quality...

A love/hate relationship with my printer

by dkaakd Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Mar 21 '01
Pros: Outstanding print quality, metallic and foil inks are like nothing else on the market.
Cons: cost, speed not a good primary printer.
I have an ALPS MD5000 printer. I have not purchased the $100 dye-sub upgrade, but I do print scanned images on the photo quality paper from time to time. I have a love, hate relationship with this printer.

I have had this printer for about...

$20K printer for $600

by Dicty , Nov 18 '00
Pros: inexpensive PRO quality. VERSATILE.
Cons: noisy, some surmountable color banding problems.
I don't believe most people realize what caliber of machine they are looking at when they see the Alps MD5000p next to the consumer inkjets at the local computer shops. This printer can do dye sublimation printing, something that you ordinarily can't...

Other reports on Alps and MD-5000

by Underwraps , Sep 10 '00
Pros: foils and metallics
Cons: Jams and Customer Service
I've known about Alps printers for awhile now and I've held off in buying one to get some feed back on the product, Yes its a great printer and incredibly versitle on its media and output BUT, I've also heard and read that the MD-5000 has considerable...

Interesting little machine...

by xymox_1 , Jun 12 '00
Pros: waterproof
Cons: heat sensitive, slow, expensive and scarce supplies
Alps printers have always fascinated me, mostly because they differ so greatly from all the other printers on the market today. Where leaders like HP and Epson continue to use wet ink as their medium, Alps has taken a different path with a thermal...

I love my Alps printer

by rangkiko , Aug 10 '00
Pros: Outstanding color reproduction
Cons: Slow printing, about 8 minutes for a 8.5 x 11 photograph
After several months of searching for a color printer, I finally decided to buy an Alps MD-5000. I decided to consider Alps after asking friends who own ink jets. Their complaint was the price of ink jet cartridges and how irritating it was to run out of...

Quality prints but at a high price

by ejdeleon , Jul 15 '00
Pros: dye sublimation option
Cons: slow printer, easily jams, pricey
At the onset, I'd like to say that the Alps5000 (with dye sublimation option) is the closest you'll get to professional photographic quality...hands-down. With the standard printer (without dye sub), you get an average printer (even with V-photo paper)....

by brattee , Feb 07 '00
Pros: All around great printer AAA+++
Cons: None
I LOVE my Alps MD-1000 printer. OK, so it's not the 5000 series, but, that was not an option to write about. I have four printers ... and this is the one I absolutely am in love with. I honestly can't say enough good things about it. The print...

by jamofa56 , Mar 20 '01
Pros: Potential for good photographic reproduction.

Excellent quality photo printer

by adilz , Mar 29 '00
Pros: Magnificent quality photographic prints
Cons: slow printing speed
I use this printer for printing photographs, and the quality is truly excellent. I will recommend that the dye sub upgrade should be purchased since it allows continuous tone photo quality prints. Alps should consider including the dye sub key in the...

Marvelous prints, Incredible price.

by mstamler , Dec 14 '99
Pros: Best looking and most archival photo print out there.
Cons: Long print time for 8X10 is about 19 minutes.
The Alps series of printers is outstanding in quality and photographic realism. The 5000 is especially so as it prints true dye sublimation prints, and coats the prints with a UV protectant making it's prints the most archival dye-subs on the market...
