How to Overclock a Processor

Overclocking is setting your processor to run at a higher than officially recommended speed. Many processors handle an extra performance notch with ease. But there's always a risk of increasing system crash frequency and even damaging the component. Which processors oveclock well, and how would you instruct a novice user to go about doing it?
