Pros: A great learning experience for newbies, easier than most Linux distrobutions, great satisfaction in solving problems, and free! Cons: Frustrating at times (especially getting hardware working), potential to mess system up if you're not experienced, limited software compatibility, Win2k may be better alternative for current Win98 power users
Summary: This summer, as a project to challenge myself, I bought a copy of RH6 to install. I chose RH6 after reading from various sources that it was a reliable, and well supported distribution of Linux, and was a good starting point for newbie Linux users. ... read more

Pros: Greatly Simplified Installation,
Nice Modern Graphical Interface,
Great Bundle Of Useful Applications Cons: Still Lacks Support For Many Popular Programs,
Changing System Configurations Still Somewhat Difficult
Summary: I recently purchased Red Hat Linux 8.0 to run on my secondary home computer for software development. I didn't have a fast internet connection at the time, so I paid $15 to get the CDs shipped to me. This was the first time I had been installing Red ... read more

Pros: High Demand For Knowledgeable Users Cons: What Do You Do With It?
Summary: I’m a competent Windows user. I’d better be as that is what I do for a living, but I’m always looking to learn more. I’ve been hearing a lot about Linux, so I decided to explore it. After reading about the different versions, I settled on Red Hat as they ... read more

Pros: Runs on older machines, FREE, easy to install, stable Cons: Can't run Windows programs, difficult to un-install some programs
Summary: Ok. Let's get one thing straight. I am not a computer whiz
and don't claim to be. I do know enough to be dangerous, which can be bad at times. I am a basic user who uses the computer to surf, check e-mail, use spreadsheets and word processing, ... read more

Pros: Good Package & Easy Installation Cons: Documentation is web based
Summary: Like a lot of Windows users I was intimidated by LINUX - I dabble in UNIX at work. However I decided to give it a try on a spare DELL Dimension desktop system - but to get some hand holding I chose to go with a package. After one abortive attempt with ... read more

Pros: Fast! Runs great on "outdated" hardware. GUI is top notch. Cons: Documentation is not for the average computer user.
Summary: Updated text is at bottom
Red Hat 7.1
The product listing is for 6.2, but if you go to the store today, you'll find 7.1 on the shelf. This is a very good thing.
Installation
To be honest, I've tried a ... read more

Pros: Easyest install Cons: ok hardware support.
Summary: This is the first distribution I started using when linux got popular. Before this linux was just a kernel that you downloaded, and nobody knew what you were talking about when you told them that you didn't use windows. I have installed versions of ... read more

Pros: Fairly stable, easy to use, works out of the box. Cons: Most 'microsoft-like', least stable of linux distros, constant releases.
Summary: **Please Note: This opinion is based on downloading ISOs and burning them onto CDs. The version this opinion is based on is Redhat 7.1 (Seawolf) English version**
Redhat has stormed the market with their linux distribution. Redhat is also ... read more

Pros: Stable, well-supported, the de facto standard Cons: Somewhat insecure, no JFS, unoptimised
Summary: I have been using Linux and the BSDs for six years now, including FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Slackware, Mandrake, Debian, and Red Hat, which is what I switched to. Why? Because, if you want to run a free Unix-like OS on your PC, it's the option with the least ... read more

Pros: It's Free
(Well, it's packaged with many products) Cons: You get what you pay for.
Summary: THE GOOD:
1) It's stable. Of course, so is my TI-85 calculator. Come to think of it, an abacus is pretty stable. And why are they stable? No cool features causing instabilities, just like Red Hat.
2) It's really cheap. I got ... read more

Pros: Free, fast and powerful O/S, improved H/W support Cons: Can be tricky for beginners, not all hardware supported, sketchy printer support
Summary: After using Redhat Linux 7.2, I gave serious thought to binning Windows and going Linux “full time” on my main PC at home. Unfortunately, there were some major shortcomings with the O/S, mostly on the hardware side, that prevented me from doing so. So ... read more

Pros: An alternative to the mainstream Cons: Not quite the "no-brainer" that microsoft is.
Summary: I only installed Linux once to see if I could do it. The one thing I noted was that the monitor, that I had been considering getting rid of due to a lack of horizontal width adjustability and a resulting narrow picture, performed flawlessly when being ... read more

Pros: Ok for a fresh install (patch it!), but forget about upgrading smoothly. Cons: POOR update capability. screwed up to begin with (Errata patch MANDATORY!!!)
Summary: I bought RedHat 7.0 as an upgrade for my well configured 6.2 workstation, thinking I would save time upgrading the OS in the official way (rather than picking packages myself) for an upcoming install of KDE 2.1 Well, I was surely wrong. RedHat 7 is so ... read more

Pros: A good place to start for linux newbies Cons: Lacks the nitty gritty 'do it yourself' customization that most linux users love
Summary: I will admit it. There's just no getting past it anymore. *sigh* I am a Linux Newbie. I am not proud of it, and I will do my best to obtain Guru-hood as soon as I can.
Now that I've gotten that off of my chest, I can get on with ... read more

Pros: It WAS "stable". Cons: It isn't any more.
