Pros: for the novice - easy to install, no configuration Cons: poor documentation of advanced features (only on manufacturer's web site)
With more and more people being online 24x7 also at home, there is a market for protecting software. The risk of having a computer connected to the Internet starts with a shared C-Drive with a weak password or no password at all on it. A hacker could get...

Pros: Easy to use Cons: Doesn't work half the time, a minor security hazard
BlackICE Defender is the latest adventure in my shamelessly obsessive habit of downloading anything and everything I can get my hands on, that is free or trial. I just can’t turn down a FREE, 30-day trial of the fully functioning firewall product from...

Pros: easy to use, install and forget, complete protection, ability to trace the punks down Cons: sensitivity to Microsoft code changes, no printed manual
In a world where any 12 year old with a modem and some free time can wreck a perfectly good surf session, a firewall isn't the worst idea in the world.
Personal firewalls, working along side a decent anti-virus program, not only defend you...

Pros: Easy Setup Cons: Outbound Traffic/Programs Go Undetected
Being yet another curveball to throw at would be hackers, BlackIce Defender will give you the protection against these attackers. But this does come at a price.
This review follows personal experience with this program over the...

Pros: very easy to install and use Cons: lack of documentation, prone to failure without warning, NO free trial
I used to be a staunch BlackIce supporter. But following a series of minor annoyances and more importantly, repeated firewall failures, I finally gave up and went with another personal firewall.
BlackIce does have a lot of good things going...

Pros: Excellent IDS capabilities offer more protection than a firewall alone. Cons: Some people may prefer the way that application protection is done in products like ZoneAlarm.
A firewall is an application that allows you to selectively block certain types of Internet traffic in order to minimise risks of hackers compromising your system. Even if you don't know it, it is likely that countless bored 12 year olds across in the...

Pros: very simple to use, does not require much technical knowledge Cons: can be oversensitive, does not monitor outbound traffic, often poorly documented, limited configurability
Or are you? With this program you may never know for sure.
I started using BlackIce Defender shortly after I got a cable modem last October due to increased need for security but no longer use it as I have found there are much better choices...

Pros: One piece in the personal computer defense puzzle Cons: Takes a bit of savvy to set up the first time
BlackICE Defender is a personal network defense program that analyzes incoming network traffic looking for suspicious activity. And once it finds it you get a chance to stop it!
Defender is a relatively easy program to set-up and use, with a...

Pros: Good intrusion detection Cons: No outbound blocking, does not stealth all ports
I bought BlackICE and I liked it at first. It didn't slow down my cable modem connection even on the highest setting (Paranoid) and picked up numerous intrusion attempts. The support website gave good descriptions of each of the different attacks.

Pros: Too many to list (see below) Cons: None
It's easy to be naive. Just surf along, visiting chat rooms, and e-commercing your way through life, all without protection from prying eyes. But it's a lot smarter to understand that the world is full of people who would love to compromise your computer...

Pros: Yes, it detects incoming traffic Cons: Not instinctual to use
I tried using a firewall from Norton, but it wasn't compatible with my DSL connection....after struggling with it for a few days I had it removed, then I installed BlackICE Defender; it's compatible, so that's at least one good thing about.

Pros: Easy to use, effective. Cons: None to speak of.
Just as I was about to start writing this, the BlackIce icon in my tray started flashing. Hacker alert! Someone is trying to breach my system! I feel so violated..ewwww.
If you decide to finally throw away the security blanket of AOL and...

Pros: easy installation, user friendly Cons: none really
If you are connected to the Internet through a permanent connection (cable modem, DSL, T1, etc.) or are on it for lengthy period of times (several hours), then you absolutely need to use a personal firewall software. Blackice Defender is certainly one...

Pros: very good security; easy to install and use; protects against well known viruses Cons: not free;
Yesterday I wrote an Opinion on Zone Alarm, the so called "hack free software". I made some good points that disproved the "hack free" philosophy for this product. Today it's all about The BlackICE Defender!
This is truly...

Pros: Loads quickly, barely noticeable, detailed advice online, stable, informative, helps maintain security Cons: Only monitors certain types of security risks, minor interface bugs,
Note: I have stopped using BlackICE because I am not willing to pay for it. It is, however, a good product that you should consider purchasing or downloading for the trial period.
BlackICE is a small utility which mainly monitors port...
