This book, "Sebastian and Crawford Counties: Arkansas", by Steven Hanley and Ray Hanley is a book sure to be eagerly devoured by anyone with a love for history. It will especially intrigue those who hail from the Sebastian and Crawford county area. The book recounts the history of this area back to the days of Ft. Smith/Van Buren being on the cusp of the wild, wild west. There is such a colorful history to be told, and the book is wonderful in that it uses old postcards to mark the passage of time. The book gives an accurate and learned history lesson of the area, while at the same time, it lets the reader "listen in" on the personal notes written on the backs of these postcards that are now pieces of history. The book features more than two hundred postcards. Explore the story of the "Hanging Judge Parker" in Fort Smith, the old railroad depot at Van Buren, and wind your way north up Highway 71, through the histories of Alma and Mountainburg. The rural areas aren't neglected here, either. It's a wonderful cornucopia of historical nuggets that will keep you turning the pages of this book. Enjoy!
