Napster, the year old MP3 song swapping program has become a favorite of mine. I use it all the time to download my favorite songs. I wholeheartedly disagree with Metallica's Lars Ulrich and the Rap Mogul Dr. Dre and their views on Napster. Their lawsuits should never have been filed against the company. Without Napster, many of today's up and coming artists would never have "made it," and many of today's older and more renowned artists wouldn't be as successful (and popular) without the availability of Napster. As you can imagine, I am extremely upset about the rulings of Judge Marilyn Patel. Its obvious that she doesn't understand what Napster is all about or else she wouldn't be making this ruling. She and the said artists claim that Napster is stealing royalties from every music artist of every genre and that just ISN'T TRUE! The Napster system works as follows: people who are registered with Napster download MP3s (songs) from each other. There is no Napster interface, Napster doesn't intervene, and they're not involved. With Napster's service, they allow the connection to take place and that's the bottom line. Every day uninformed people come across songs and artists on Napster they have never heard of before. With this program, people are given the opportunity to sample songs and by taking advantage of this opportunity, there's a greater possibility that they will indeed purchase the Album/CD than by going and purchasing the CD blindly, without ever having heard it played before. In my opinion, it doesn't make sense to purchase an ALBUM/CD without being aware of what's on it beforehand, and Napster makes all that possible. I highly recommend Napster for music lovers everywhere. It's the best! Napster for President!  |
