I bought my Beolab8000 speakers 7 years ago from a Bang & Olufsen store in Denver, Colorado.
Their staff was EXTREMELY knowledgeable on all products, and even offered help in getting the most out of your speakers by suggesting other brands of subwoofers that go well with them.
I have had ZERO problems with my BEOLAB8000 speakers in the 7 years I've had them.
The sound quality is suberb with amazing range from light bass to high trebles and everything in between.
I have a KD Lang CD (Shadowland - song is Black Coffee) I used to test the various speakers I tried out at home.
With the Bose systems, there were certain areas of the song that were distorted, and other portions where you missed certain pitches of voice and instruments.
With these Beolab speakers, you hear a true, full range of sounds -- many that you miss with other speakers.
If you live in an apartment or have a small space, the speakers alone are fine - just enough bass. However, if you have a larger room (or a house) you definitely want to get a subwoofer -- it compliments these speakers quite well.
You can use these with or without the Bang and Olufsen CD/Receiver units. I originally used them with the B&O Beolab2500. When I upgraded to a surround sound Sony receiver, I had to order a converter (necessary to use with powered receivers, available through B&O). The speakers have their own power source (each plugs into a wall) so the converter stops power from coming from the receiver.
The design of the speakers is timeless -- and with the tall slim size, very easy to place in a corner or small space. The base of the speakers is VERY heavy, which protects them from getting knocked over.
