They have done it againMar 07 '01 Write an essay on this topic.The Bottom Line Web based FREE service that allows you to file your federal and state tax returns with little effort HDVEST.COM has done it again. They are offering to file your taxes electronically for free, and to up it up, this year, they let you do both the federal and state returns. I had used HDVEST.COM last year too, but at that time, they did not offer to do my state returns, which were for a partial year. My experience last year was very good. A lot of friends, who spent between $20 and $40 at other online or brick-and-mortar tax agencies, warned me that it is risky to use free services. So, before blindly using HDVEST.COM, I entered the same data at several other paid sites and at HDVEST.COM also to see if there were any differences. There were none. I went ahead and filed my federal returns with HDVEST.COM. I was able to check on the status of my returns using my login ID and got back my returns in a weeks time, directly into my checking account! It was so easy. This year, I used the same login I had used last year and entered all the data again. A mistype somewhere alarmed me with a $8000 due! After I re-entered the data again, everything was fine. I once again cross checked the values with several other paid services before using HDVEST. This time, I was able to do my state (NJ) returns also using HDVEST. The number of forms I had to fill this year were more, but my tax documents are not very complex and the web based interface was very intuitive, remembering where I had left the last time and offering helpful hints. I would like to see how it works if someone does joint returns, with multiple W2 forms, IRA, etc. Since this site is on the list of sites referred by IRS, I guess they have passed through all the steps. Overall, I am very satisfied with the service of HDVEST.COM. I had used them last year for free, and I used them this year also for free! I commend them for their service and hope they continue this tradition as a value added service for a long time.  |
