Cast Iron Equals Non Stick

Mar 07 '01

The Bottom Line Do not put in dishwasher and rub with oil after cleaning, it will be ready to go again. There is nothing like fried chicken cooked in a Cast Iron Skillet.

I got my first black cast iron frying pan from my Granny 35 years ago. I have been using one ever since. It cooks anything and everything. It is the original non stick as far as I am concerned.

Where Can You Find Cast Iron Cook Ware?

This cookware you can buy new, find at flea markets, or garage sales. Cast Iron comes in all shapes and sizes.

Who Uses This Cookware?
Any good cook uses them. They are a staple in the south where I come from. All of my daughters have them and use them as I do and my mother before me and her mother and so on. Anybody that has a country kitchen or decor will have some.

I Bought It, How Do I Care For It?

All Cast Iron has to be seasoned before use. It is made of iron that can rust very easily unless it is cared for properly.

To season a piece of Cast Iron Cookware rub with cooking oil or lard, and stick in a hot oven for a couple of hours at about 300 degrees. This lets the grease or oil infiltrate the cast iron and be absorbed to a certain extent.

After seasoning your cookware be sure to take care of it. I let everyone in my house know that you do not put cast iron in the dishwasher, nor do you leave water or anything else in it after cooking unless it is oil.

When I finish cooking in mine, I empty it out and wipe what I can out. If anything is burnt in it, I scrub it with a scrubber then reseason it. Most of the time all you have to do after cooking with it is wipe it out and rub oil on it with a paper towel and you are ready for the next time.

When a pan or pot is properly seasoned it is non stick, distributes the heat evenly and a joy to cook in.

If you find an old rusted one for sale buy it, then just throw in a hot fire, burn barrel or hot embers in a grill and let burn till all the old build up of grease and rust is off let cool then season. Cast Iron will not burn up but just like an oven all the grease and build up of years will burn off.

If you ever get used to cooking in cast iron, you will never go back to your non stick pans again.
