Here Kitty, Kitty...

The Bottom Line Be certain your vet likes cats. There is nothing worse that asking a dog person to take care of a cat...

Having worked in Animal health for over 15 years, I would say I have had my share of 'cat' experience. And I suppose I might be qualified to tell you how to choose a veterinarian for your little kitty cat.

To begin with, I am, at heart, a cat person. However, after the requisition of 2 Rottweilers, I have since become a dog person. I cannot and will not stand by and watch my dogs have kitty snacks before bedtime.

Here are some things to help you choose a cat veterinarian.

Try not to select a vet who has dog pictures all over his office. It's not a good sign. Look at the pet food and check to see if there are any bags of kitty food. If not, wander out the door and keep looking.

Look for a female vet, most women like cats and will be happy to care for Fluffy for a premium price.

Listen when you first step inside-what do you hear? If it is the soft mewing of an adorable fur baby, look no further. If you hear lots of screaming and screeching, look no further. If you hear cussing and swearing in the back room and THEN screeching and screaming, look no further.

Size up the waiting room, does everyone have a pet-on-a-leash? If so, re-read the previous advice.

Does the clinic smell like a cat box? Yes? Then you are home. This is the place for you.

Does everyone who works there have band-aids and black and blue marks on their body? Are the technicians wearing full body armour? Does the doctor have a very very long stethescope that can be used from a distance?

Look at the shelves, are there rows of pill guns, cat laxative, hairball medicine, and cat carriers? Does your vet sell gunny sacks and wire mesh bags?

Are there three techs for every doctor? Did they groan when you walked in the door? Did they show you the door when you mentioned Fluffy hates the vet? Did they put the closed sign up in the window?

Do you always get a wrong number when you call for an appointment or are they booked up until 2005? Maybe you better move on and keep looking.
