Sensing a Theme? (Reply to this comment)
by tbone2k
Mitsubishi seems to be going for the "show over go" theme here. I found the Lancer to have the same problem. Looks great, but no power.
It seems like Mitsu is bringing cars over here but they really aren't designed for the American market. I'm sure something like the Outlander would be popular across the ocean, where smaller engines are more common due to the price of fuel.
Not that they don't build great cars. They have been around North America longer than most people realize. I remember my friend's brother had a Dodge 2000 GTX back in the 80's which was a great car. My girlfriend is still driving her '92 Plymouth Colt 200E.

I believe it is based on the Lancer.
You should probably still drive it--your opinion of the engine might differ. I believe the 0-60 times I've seen are over 12 seconds, though, making this among hte slowest vehicles you can buy. And it's not just the acceleration--the engine sounds overworked and out of place.

Too bad... nice exterior styling (Reply to this comment)

Great review.
When I started seeing Outlanders on the streets this (or was it last?) year, I thought I really liked the styling, though in my opinion Mitsubishi styling in general has gone downhill over the last few years. The Outlander reminded me of a smaller, more sporty RX300, of all things, with a bit of the old Mitsu Summit/Expo microvans, which I really liked.
Is the outlander based on the Lancer platform? No wonder they cannot fit a V6 in the engine compartment. Too bad the current I4 is so unadequate - it does feel right in the Galant.
Thanks to your review, I will probably save time and not even test-drive the Outlander - looks like it will be CR-V time late this year.
