Quick Reference:
Violence: This is a story of a hit man. Killing a person is expressed as a trivial thing.
Sex: There are some pretty graphic descriptions of sexual acts.
Offensive Language: I honestly think you could turn to any page and find at least 15 vulgar curse words.
Do I recommend it?: NO!
This book was given to me by my father-in-law earlier this year and I was interested by the story I expected it to be about. I always enjoyed watching old game shows on those lazy summer days when I had nothing better to do, so I figured I would give it a chance. I now wish that I never knew about Chuck Barris.
The Plot:
The book begins with Barris having a dream about staring at himself in a mirror and wondering why he looks so bad. He wakes up and is on his way to his next job with the CIA, in which he has been ordered to kill a man named Mario Moretti. From here Barris flashes back to the beginning of his Hollywood career.
Over the next twenty chapters, Barris describes how he became famous as the director or host of such shows as The Gong Show, Operation Entertainment, The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game and The Rah Rah Show. This story is paralleled with Barris description of his supposed ties with the CIA as a hit man with the alias Sunny Sixkiller. He describes in detail numerous jobs that he had parts in as either the helper or the actual killer.
By the end of the book, Barris is old, fat, jaded and vulgar. All of his friends have been killed and he has become a recluse he abhors being seen in public places.
Writing Style:
This is an easy book to quickly read through. Barris is not much of a skilled writer and the basis of the book is action instead of description and thought.
Overall Opinion:
This book was seriously the most vulgar book I have ever read. Why did I continue reading it? Well, I have a history of never finishing any book all the way up through my college years. So over the past couple of years I have made a little pact with myself to not give up on any book. I almost broke the pact here.
Anyway, enough about how much I did not enjoy the book and on to why I did not enjoy the book. The main reason for this is the blatant vulgarity of Barris. There are conversations where every other word is a curse word; he sees women as nothing more than something to give him pleasure; and he views the life of a human being as a trivial thing.
Overall, I would not recommend this book to anyone.
