Yup. I remember thinking way back when that she didn't have a grasp of the word Ironic. I didn't mention it in the review (as I don't think it's *that* importnat), but I do also recall a story around the same time that said the same exact think...

Thanks for the comment. Much appreciated.

I actually heard "You Outta Know" before this album was released on a very early edition of CMJ magazine. I put the song in a mix for my brother and some other friends, and everyone wanted to know just who the hell this artist was...three months later, she was all over the radio. Go figure.

I always liked this album. It's thoughtful but energetic, angry but not misdirected. In general, a great collection.

One major issue I have with this collection is the song Ironic. Despite its major hit status, Alanis apparently doesn't actually understand the definition of the word, because roughly 80% of the events described in the song are not ironic at all. They're downers, bummers, etc., but not ironic. Rain on your wedding day is not ironic. A free ride when you've already paid is not ironic. The only thing here that is truly ironic is that the song is named as such, whereas the contents are anything but that which they purport to be.

For as smart as the rest of the album is, this little fact has always bugged the living crap out of me. Obviously.

There, now that I've purged that bit of nasty, I feel much better.

Cheers,

Mike

I love this album, as well as the most recent Under the Rug Swept. It is, in fact, my reading/rating/commenting music of choice, and I'm listening to it right now. You Learn is absolutely one of my favorites. This is a great review, doing the album justice - no easy feat!

Thanks for the comment. I maintain, that even while many songs sound beautiful any investigation of the lyrics turns up the fact that Morissette is/was ANGRY. Sure, there are the obvious examples, but the whole thing is pretty darned nasty.

Like you said, I have heard the album. Not just heard it, but heard it hundreds (thousands?) of times...

Thanks again.

Not entirely sure, as a non-threatened male who likes this album, where your interpretation is even coming from. "You Oughtta Know" and "Right Through You" are angry, aggressive songs -- but that's two songs. "All I Really Want" is self-deprecatory and hopeful, "Mary Jane" and "Head Over Heels" and "Perfect" are kind, "Not the Doctor" is the sort of anger that comes from a person who has been stretched a little too far but remains essentially giving, "Your House" is whimsical, "Hand in my Pocket" is idealistic. And what kind of man-hater thanks her all-male bandmates so warmly in the liner notes?

Usually when i hear Alanis tagged as angry, i know the speaker hasn't actually listened to the album. You have - as your typically excellent descriptions of the music itself reveal beyond doubt. Odd.

This is a beautiful review about a beautiful album. Your descriptive phrases capture the feeling of the music perfectly. This CD belongs to my daughter but I also listen to it and agree with your assessment. Thanks.

...helped me survive my teen years. It's a classic still as relevant and provoking today as it was in the mid 90's (for me at least). Great write up!

I, like so many others, really connected with this album when it came out. Time to dust off the mp3s (can they be dusted off?).

Great Review!
