| samcintron_dt1's Full Review: Navman iCN 630 GPS Receiver |
Ah, finally my Navman ICN 630 arrived! I must say Im extremely happy I made the purchase. I was considering an in-car navigation system but didn't want the hassle of reconfiguring my car as well as the cost. I also have 2 cars and wanted the freedom of using the navigation system between both cars. So I started looking at the StreetPilot III from garmin. Just by accident I ran across the Navman and immediately fell in love with it. Side by side comparisons make the StreetPilot III look like a dinosaur.
One thing I noticed was there wasnt many reviews on this unit; being that it is so new - that's understandable. But after reading the specs and what little reviews I could find, I took the gamble and purchased the unit - Im glad I did.
I just received it yesterday and used it today. Setup will be a bit confusing if you are not familiar with installing usb devices and loading software. The quick start guide fails to walk you through step by step. Rather they will outline the individual steps necessary to complete the setup. One example of this would be that they tell you to connect the Navman to a power source, then connect the usb cable from the unit to your computer and click "install maps" from the ICN desktop application. What they fail to tell you is that when you first connect the unit to your pc, windows will prompt with the all familiar "new hardware found". You will not be able to install maps until you provide the drivers to windows.
Either way, I didn't find this to interfere with the setup, but then again I deal with computers for a living. As for the unit itself, my first test run was flawless. It took me all but 5 minutes to install the unit in my car and set my destination. The GPS signal was acquired very quickly and I noticed that it's very sensitive. Which can be a double-edged sword. For instance, the GPS signal fades quickly under a passage way or large tree but quickly comes back.
One thing I noticed after a second day of testing, the unit turned itself off for no reason. I had to power back on. Good thing was it immediately re-calculated my route and keep me on track to my destination.
