henstt's Full Review: Symantec Norton AntiVirus 2003 (10021189) for PC
I use the AV packages for about 4 months now on two PC's, both with W98 SE.
Installation is an easy and straight forward process.
After installation a simple wizard guides you through the initial steps which assure that you start with a virus-free system.
A simple but effective user interface allows easy change of settings and gives access to all functions an average user might want.
So far there are really no complaints to make.
However, after a while some change on my PC apparently interfered with the correct functioning of the AV package. At startup there was a message, which advised to re-install the package. So I did, or I tried at least. The installation software detected the presence of the package and allowed an uninstall. However, this uninstall crashed somewhere in the middle. Next attempts were just as unsuccessful. Also manual attempts (perhaps not very professional) to delete the programs and clean the registry were not completely successful. Finally there was only one way out: complete re-installation of the entire W98 system + other software.
When this would have happened once, it could have been a glitch of my particular system. However, it happened twice and today my other PC suddenly showed similar (but not identical) problems after an Internet Explorer update. Failure for the AV package to correctly start-up and blue screens showing disastrous errors at system close down. And again Uninstall/Install someway end up in a vicious loop.
To my opinion this AV 2003 is not stable enough or conflicting with W98 or other software and the install procedure is really not suitable to get you back in business.
