I thought I found the best monitor for my space issues at home (and it would have been) but I quickly learned that the monitor I bought a minute before was not compatible with my system.
I immediately tried to cancel the order but found the following to be true:
There is no 800 number that reaches a human being for normal end-user customers. The 800 number posted on the site is an automated system with NO order canceling options.
I ended up not playing their game by calling another of the many 800 numbers until I reached a human (by calling the student line).
When the customer service agent realized I was not calling the correct number, he transferred me to a human in the right department (isn't it weird I keep using the word "human?")
Once there, I was able to cancel the order (or so I thought).
A few days later, I received the monitor (on time and intact).
I was perplexed because I thought the order was cancelled. Did this mean they charged my card as well? And if so, what happened to the cancellation order.
So I called Dell again through the same roundabout way, got transferred and then set up a return order with the human. He was courteous and efficient but could not explain what happens to cancellation orders that are processed after the order is fulfilled.
Apparently they are tossed and the burden of initiating the return is put on the customer. No call from Dell to say that they know about the cancellation and would like to know if they should set up a return order proactively and remove any charges to the credit card.
As it turns out, my card was charged and I have to wait maybe 30days before the charges are removed thus risking finance charges on the purchase. The human said that I could have those finance charges taken care of in the form of Dell credit but that they cannot reimbuse be for them. Great!
So, for all of you who might find yourself in this situation here is a juicy piece of info:
Dells human 800 customer service number for normal customers is:
1-800-624-9897 ext 66966
then select option 2
then select option 4
Easy, right? Good luck.
