Mesmerized, I watched the infomercial. Did that thing just inhale nuts and bolts off the floor? Yup, it did. And moist food too? Uh-huh. And then the clincher. A three year old used it to clean the floor. You must understand, I have lost every battle for a broom since the day my daughter could say mine. When I saw the Euro-Pro Shark Cordless Sweeper, I knew I had to have one.
Where? How Much?
Im not an infomercial-ordering kind of gal, so I waited patiently until it showed up at
Target last month for the low, low price of $59.95.
Love at First Sweep
When I first purchased it last month, I was all set to rave and give it 5 stars. Its cordless, its light, and it cleaned up peas and rice off the floor. The width of the base is the same size as my stairs. Best of all, I could let my daughter use it without seeing all the debris flying across the room like it does when she sweeps. What more could you ask for?
The Honeymoon is Over
I have found some significant drawbacks to the Euro-Pro Shark Cordless Sweeper. It struggles on carpet. It makes a whirring noise thats a little hard on the ears. It is so light that its easy to pick it up and completely miss the floor when sweeping. It appears to be losing suction such that when I repeatedly pass over the same spot it misses what Im trying to sweep.
Assembly and Instructions
-The unit is fairly easy to assemble. You get the base and three metal pieces for the handle. The instruction manual is clearly written and the picture diagram is easy to follow. One piece of the handle is different and has a handgrip on it. It goes on the bottom so you can use the sweeper without the handle. Its a little awkward to install the bottom part of the handle since its at an angle facing away from the base.
-There is a small circular piece that whisks dust away from the baseboards. The instruction manual shows how to install it, but it was preinstalled on mine. Other reviewers have stated that this piece has either fallen off or broken off. Another reviewer stated he was unable to obtain a replacement part.
-The battery is preinstalled. It comes with a slight charge although the directions tell you to let it fully charge before your first use (I believe it was 12 hours).
-Turn it on and off by depressing a silver oval-shaped button to the left of the handle in the back of the unit.
-There is no release lever to recline the unit. Use your foot to gently hold the unit to the floor as you move the handle backwards with your hand.
-To empty the dirt tray, use your thumb and forefinger to grasp the rectangular box to the left of the handle. Youll need to squeeze it a little to get it to open up. Then pull it all the way out and empty it into the trash. It can be cleaned with a damp cloth.
-The roller in front of the base sweeps the dirt into the sweeper. If anyone in your family sheds, youll want to take the time to really clear it off so it can turn properly.
Final Thoughts
The concept for this sweeper is fabulous, but the overall quality isnt. In my home, the priority is keeping dinner remains off the Pergo floor without a wrestling match. The priority in your home will probably be different, and if so Id recommend you keep looking.
I still have another month on my retailers generous return policy. If I can resolve the suction issue by cleaning the sweepers brush and dirt tray, it will stay. If not, back to the store it goes. Ill keep you posted.
