| cobrakon's Full Review: Aiwa NSX-DS55 Mini Theater System |
The Aiwa NSX-DS55 is the best Home Theater system in it's class. As a matter of fact, it matches many true HT systems in the $500~600 range.
Mine was one of the last production units and I have 100w front speakers instead of the 70w that normal ship. I actually have the DS-50 but the only difference is the included sub-woofer which came as a freebie anyway.
The sound output is excellent for music and video with a very natural sounding tonal quality. The center and surround speakers are only 25w but if you actually know about the 5.1 standard, the rear speakers are to support the primary channels. The effect of the front channels being much more powerful makes it appear as though the rear speakers are inadequate. This is actually untrue but you much go into the configuration and set the balance on all 5 speakers so that they are matched. This greatly improves the sound field and there is no way to discern that the rear units are only 25w. Also you the subwoofer level is controlled by a knob on the unit, electronically through the receiver, and using the Dolby LFE adjustment. You should have the physical volume at 1/4 the maximum or it does become overwhelming.
The receiver has 3 CD trays, 2 cassette decks and on-unit control for most settings. The remote is required to actually get into the Dolby configuration. You have delay adjustment, independent surround channel volume, LFE adjustment, midnight theater mode, plus speaker channel selection and T-Bass. Most of the functions of full fledged receivers are available without having to settle for weaker satellite type speakers.
I have had mine for 3+ years and have been very happy with it. Friends with much more expensive and powerful systems are shocked that the "gap" between the DS-50/55 and theirs is slim at best.
