The scariest 15 seconds of my life

Mar 08 '01

The Bottom Line If you haul (pun intended), you need these cheap, but life-saving items.

I am going to let you in on the greatest piece of advice you need to listen to when traveling with travel trailers and U-Hauls.

Though this advice is very short and to the point, it also should be used when towing any type of trailer on the back of your car, truck or van.

When my family was moving to our present location we used one of those U-Haul type trailers hooked to the back of our truck on the little ball on our bumper. It was when we were going through Oklahoma, where the winds blow across the highway at very high rates of speed, is where our lives flashed before us. All of a sudden a huge semi-truck passed us up and the wind kicked up even more after it passed and caused the trailer to swerve back and forth which cause me to grip the wheel for dear life and try to control the swerving without crashing. It was the scariest 15 seconds of my life.

I made a vow that at the next gas station I would fix this problem to control the trailer. I purchased two of those black rubber bands with hooks on the ends. They cost me about $2 each, but they ensured that the trailer would not swerve like it did.

Here is what I did:

- Take one of the bands and hook it to the outermost left portion of the trailer you can.
- Hook the other end to the farmost left portion of the back of your vehicle. I did not hook it to the bumper cause it might have torn off the bumper.
- Do the same for the right side.

What this did was stabilize the load on each side so instead of just the ball hitch controlling the load, I had two rubber bands on either side also balancing the load in case of a swerve. It did not make driving more difficult either, nor did it prevent me from making turns since the bands were able to stretch in either direction.
