Thanks for letting me know, Tom. It's sad, really, because it has such potential.

I'd write more in travel if I actually GOT to travel. LOL. Three kids between the ages of 10 months and 4 years doesn't allow for a lot of going places.

The Hotel Syracuse closed its doors on 28 May, 2004. Its future remains uncertain, though there is a possibility that the hotel may be renovated and re-opened some time in the distant future. It is sad to see a once-great landmark fall on its heels. Do write more....excellent details here. Tom Barnes

Sorry to read that you were unfortunate enough to experience the Hotel Syracuse. But as they say "whatever doesn't kill you only makes you stronger".

For future reference, if you need accomodations in Syracuse try the Hawthorn Suites in Armory Square only a couple blocks from the OnCenter. Because the Hawthorn is by far the best hotel in the city it is often at full occupancy.

Other hotels to try - the Marx (the old Best Western which just underwent a 28 million renovation and is fantastic), the Sheraton on the SU Hill (but gets rather pricy) and the Genessee Inn which was also recently renovated. Room rates at the Genesee Inn are a very fair $99.

As for the Hotel Syracuse, it has filed bankruptcy probably half a dozen times since it was dropped by Radisson 5 years ago. The bank that owns it wants to demolish it but because it is a historic building, they are running into all kinds of trouble. Because the hotel is under bankruptcy protection they can't offer refunds (if they do it will be about 8 cents on the dollar) and your husband was right, any money they do take in is deposited right into the creditors bank account with no re-investment into the hotel.

Recently the hotel announced that it was operating only with a skeleton staff, closing all the restuarants (not contracted out) unless a large group was in house and minimizing housekeepers and non-essential staff.

I'm suprised you didn't get sick from the food at the Hotel Syracuse - I've had the misfortune of seeing the kitchen there (I used to manage a bar/restuarant in Syracuse and was looking at buying some of their equipment at auction) and it is absolutely filthy. Rat droppings are everywhere as are all sorts of bugs (roaches-a-plenty). Grease is on every surface and trash is piled up.

Advise people in the future to avoid the Hotel for their own safety.

Best of luck in your future travels.
