| technovillian's Full Review: KitchenAid Slide-In Gas Range |
We bought this kitchaid range after a long period of consideration involving many different models. We almost went for a Thermodor slide-in model with very similar features, but the $3000 price tag was too steep. Besides price, the most important factors in our decision were the touch screen controls, programmability, convection oven performance, and ceran top.
We have been mostly satisfied with our range. The only real complaints are that the grates are hard to clean: grease sticks to the glossy black finish in such a manner that it cannot be properly cleaned. It may sound like I'm just a clean-freak, but let me say that I appreciate the way a cast-iron pan can be wiped down without a lot of scrubbing. But these grates accumulate crud in such a way that it cannot be easily removed!! I'm thinking about sand-blasting them in order to improve the finish. Can anyone can offer up an opinion on this idea?
Other than the hard-to-clean grates, we are very happy with this range. The electronic controls work well and are only inconvenient when cleaning (beep beep! while you wipe it down!). The convection oven seems to work well. We've cooked cookies a couple of times with very good results. The electronic timers are very convenient. The ceran top is also very nice. It's so easy to clean that you can make this range look almost brand-new except for the glossy black grates which don't get clean no matter what you do. Why didn't they make the finish of these grates in plain cast-iron like other manufacturers such as Dacor? I don't know! If anyone else has thought of sand-blasting these, please let me know!!
I should relate one experience that left me with a doubt about Kitchenaid quality. We had a pot of water boil over and the hot water leaked all over the top. Shortly thereafter the touch-panel quit working. After about 4 hours the controls began working again (evidently they had to dry out). I consider this to be a fairly major design flaw, as the stove should be able to handle a boil-over without the controls failing.
