Pros: Inexpensive, compatible with all the cool CD burning software!
Cons: Slower than sin! Not designed for people who do alot of burning.
The Bottom Line: Not for speed demons. A great drive that gets the task done, but dated and not high performance. Newer, faster technology is availible.

Overview:
I own an HP CD Writer Plus 7200i. In a nut shell, it writes at a top speed of 2X both to CDRs and CDRWs. This drive was purchased back in 1998, and is still going strong today!
Compatibility
I've used all the "cool" software to burn, rip, and manipulate CDs with this drive. It's compatible across the board with products like Adaptecs EZ CDC Creator, ahead software's Nero Burning ROM, and even with non-Windows based applications such as those availible under distributions of Linux. Extremely versatile and compatible, no doubt about it.
This drive can be used to create bootable CDs and occassional backups of hard drive information, burn data and music to CD, and pretty much anything you can imagine.
The Downside:
It really isn't that great about overburning though in my opinion. I've had some troubles making backups of copy protected software (yes, I did buy it thanks!).
I suppose you could look at this in a positive way. It's not fast, but we're busy people, so while your burning a CD you can be doing other things in the background on your PC (if you have a powerful enough machine...and trust it!), or you could run off and make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or go for a bike ride while your CD burns in the drive.
