Transforming a special needs child's behavior

Written: Jun 12 '03 (Updated Sep 20 '04)
Pros:Helps you figure out why your child acts the way they do.
Cons:N/A
The Bottom Line: It is a good book for people with difficult children it helps with almost any situation.

I really enjoyed this book. It had information that helps explain why your child behaves the way that they do. I don't think this book is just for an ADHD child but almost any child would benefit from the program. The program in the book is very easy to follow and understand. It explains also had to deal with consequences, tantrums, violent behavior and bullying.

I would recommend this book as a good read for anyone looking for a good behavior management program for their child. I have been doing the program in this book for over a year with our children and it does take time but they are doing so much better now on the program.

There are several aspects of the program that you can use we ourselves use the chip program with our children. Every positive behavior that they show they receive a chip we use plain poker chips. With those chips the kids can turn in for a special reward. Our reward list consists of special movies, going to the dollar store, special dessert, trip to the mystery box. The mystery box is a box that has several inexpensive items in it which they can pick out an item for a certain number of chips ours is set at 20 chips.

This program can be adapted in several ways I know a mom that is using it with stars another that is using marbles in a fish bowl. But, it is a way to show and reward your child for their good behaviors which when they see the rewards they earn they try even harder to do more positive behaviors.
We even had our teachers at school doing this program with cards and then putting stars on the cards for each positive behavior. This program is a really good program and in the three years now that we have been doing it negative behaviors have decreased by almost 80% in our house. The school told me that one of their very troubling student doing the program with him last year and him returning this year his negative behavior decreased by 70% it takes time but it is well worth it.
