| jun123's Full Review: SSX for PlayStation 2 |
One of the better launch titles for the PS2 has to be SSX. Though at first I felt otherwise. I simply couldn't grasp the concept that a snowboarding game could ever be one of the best PS2 game available - especially after the likes of the Cool Boarders franchise... yikes. Nonetheless, I tried it out for myself, and I was amazed at the quality of the production and how much fun it actually was.
What I found out was that it wasn't just a plain old snowboarding game where you just board down a mountain with just trees and snow; it's a boardercross game where you board down a mountain with trees and snow. So what's the difference? Well, SSX adds a little twist to every level. There are fireworks and tons of special effects to enhance the game's atmosphere, themed levels such as a giant pinball machine where your character is the ball, a snowpark in Hawaii with snow and penguins. And these levels are not only great to look at, they're huge!
The best part of the game has to be the interactive soundtrack. It's such a simple concept, that no one has really used to this effect before. You see, the music starts off on a simple set of beats, and depending on how well you are performing, sounds will drop out or drop in.
Now, the game is not perfect. It does tend to slow down in single player mode, but only when the screen is filled with literally thousands of moving objects. And it doesn't take away from the gameplay. Two player split, however, is as smooth as butter left out for a day.
