Pika312's Full Review: The Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time for Nintendo 6...
Back in the days of good ol' Nintendo, there was a game that burst onto the market and found instant success. The game was "The Legend of Zelda". Ever since then, a Zelda game has appeared on every (successful) Nintendo system. Each game took forever to come out, but each one was worth it. Zelda never fails to amaze, and each game is breathtaking as the last. This new Zelda game is a remarkable result of many years of waiting. Just think about it... Zelda on N64, in 3D. Makes you tingle, doesn't it?
I'm sure you heard alot of rumors about this game. It's outdated before the Nintendo 64 was finished or it's just a quick Mario 64 clone. But rumors are just that- rumors. They're simply not true. You can't even begin to compare this game with any other. I repeat, do NOT compare this game to any other. But if you don't understand English, it should be compared to its predecessors, simply because they're also masterpieces that shouldn't be missed.
As usual, this game takes place in make-believe land, Hyrule. This is supposedly a prequel, but it throws off all the stories of the other Zelda games, and if it's a sequel, it's even more messed up. You play as Link... nothing unusual yet... as a kid... there we go! And Link lives in Kokiri Forest, where a dying tree talks to him. The forest is full of other kids too, each with their own fairy. Link finally gets a fairy, and is now considered normal. But unlike the other elves of the forest, he can actually grow, he gets to kill stuff, ride around on a horse, get married to a fish, and saves the world from inevitable chaos.
Okay, so the story is a bit unusual. But like all the other Zelda games, Ocarina of Time requires the basic skill of searching everything. There are ALOT of items and secrets in this game. A great feature in this game is the Rumble Pak. When you are near a hidden secret, your Rumble Pak would shake.
There are too many great features to list. The combat system is just one of them and is incredible. When you engage in battle, you can hack and slash, or you could lock onto your enemy, identify it, evade its attacks by sidestepping or backflipping, block if you need to, and finally finish off the enemy. You can save alot of time and health this way. Not all enemies can be beaten by using your sword. You'll have to consult Navi, your fairy, and she will tell you about it, giving some helpful hints. Navi doesn't just help in battle. If you get stuck or see an unusual object, she would help you solve the puzzle. And there are ALOT of puzzles.
The small list of items aren't as near the number as the ones in a massive RPG like Final Fantasy, but there's alot of ways to use them. If you get stuck, try anything, even the most ridiculous items can help you out of a jam. For example, if you need a fire, and there is a torch in the room, you can set your sticks on fire (*Cough* *Cough* Ernest *Cough*). Or if you don't have sticks, you can use your fire magic. But of course, it's limited and hard to replenish. To get through this game, you will have to think logically. Your items and weapons can do anything. Like your wooden shield. It's made out of wood. So watch your shield burn if it's set on fire. Your horse runs fast. So it can trample anything that stands in its path.
These are just some of the things you can do.
As in every Zelda game, the world is huge and there are alot of places to explore. And again as in every Zelda game, this 256 Megabits game has three slots for battery backup. If you thought the worlds in the other Zelda games were big, don't even try to imagine this one unless you want a splitting headache. Everywhere you go, you will see amazing backgrounds. Every detail is there, from the tree to the guards, to the bush to the butterflies, every detail is there. The graphics are just amazing. And that's not even with the Expansion Pak!
Puzzles... argh... entertaining, but quite annoying. While some puzzles just require to kill everything that breathes, and some require you to push blocks to certain places, the most annoying ones are time based. Imagine this. You do everything, you climb to the open door, but you were a second too late, and it shuts in your face. So what do you do? You scream and curse, and you do it again. This game requires alot of thinking, so if you failed school, you may want to reconsider playing. Even the bosses will make you scratch your head, who by the way, has the coolest deaths ever.
As Link grows from child to teen, there are alot of changes. Something in the past won't be there in the future, and vice-versa. Your friends won't even recognize you when you grow up. But you can go back into the past and be a kid again. These are the two different time periods. Not only are there two time periods, day changes into night as well. And again, some things you can't do at night but you can in the day. There are also more enemies at night.
Aside from the game itself, there are many side quests (including fishing) and hidden goodies. You don't have to get any of it, but it makes the game a whole lot easier. They're extremely hard to find, and you can't find them without a certain item... or yourself. You can use yourself to find secrets. Roll into trees and crates to see what pops out. Search hidden tunnels in the graveyard. Ride some bean plants. You can get extra heart containers to expand your health meter, bags to hold more seeds and bombs, wallets to hold more rupees, masks to get amusing responses from people, and better weapons. There's even a Pikachu mask!
Not only is the music great as usual, it plays a major role in the game. In fact, YOU play the music. On your ocarina. You can play 12 different songs to warp to different places, open doors, unlock secrets, and summon your horse. And you can play ANY song on your ocarina. Depending on what buttons you press, it plays a different note. You can even play some notes together to make it sharp or flat. The background music is just as great, and the sound effects are realistic.
So should you buy this game? The answer won't be in this opinion. Just answer this question. Do chickens lay eggs? NORMAL chickens, okay? I don't want dozens of e-mails with smart remarks. "A dead chicken doesn't lay eggs" or "They can't lay eggs if they're constipated". So I'll just say it plain and simple: Yes, you should buy this game. And for $39.95, it's like you're stealing this masterpiece. But don't steal it. The last thing I want is being charged for helping in the act of theft.
